This research paper intends to examine the role of autonomous mode of learning in promoting student centered learning among secondary school students. Autonomous learning technique considered as most emerging technique to enhance student centered learning. Qualitative research design was used to examine the role of autonomous learning and possible obstacles to implement this innovative learning methodology in school settings. The researcher selected 10 secondary school teachers for this study by using convenient sampling method. A self-developed interview guide was used to conduct the interviews for the study the reliability and validity was ensured through language and subject experts. Researcher added open ended probe type questions and conducted semi-structured interviews to probe the teachers’ views about the implementation of autonomous learning. Interviews were approximately 15 minutes’ length. The thematic analysis technique was used to generate different code, themes and sub-themes from the data. Teachers considered implementation of autonomous learning a problematic task in secondary school classrooms. They feel there may be less teacher training, students’ resistance, disciplinary issues and few organizational problems. It may be recommended that this issue may address prior to autonomous leaning in secondary schools.
