Abstract

The Ukraine War has brought nuclear deterrence back into the spotlight, particularly concerning the nuclear postures of the United States and Russia. This article examines the evolving dynamics of nuclear deterrence between these two powers amidst the conflict, exploring their respective nuclear strategies, posturing, and the implications for global security. Drawing on classical deterrence theory and the current geopolitical context, the study highlights how nuclear rhetoric and the threat of escalation have been utilized by both the U.S. and Russia to shape the course of the conflict and signal red lines. The article also explores how these postures reflect broader shifts in global nuclear deterrence norms, the challenges posed by emerging technologies, and the potential risks of miscalculation. Ultimately, the paper argues that the Ukraine War underscores the fragile nature of nuclear stability in the modern world and the need for careful diplomacy and arms control to prevent nuclear escalation. The findings of this research offer important insights into the future of nuclear deterrence in the 21st century.
