Review of Social Attitudes Towards Non-Normative Identities: A Study within Pakistan’s Socio-Cultural Landscape
Keywords:
LGBTIQ, Youth, Social Acceptance, Religion, CultureAbstract
Gender & sexual non-normative identities such as LGBTIQ is an abbreviation for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer individuals who are also known as Sexual minorities. The presence and visibility of the LGBTIQ community in Pakistan continue to be a sensitive and contested issue, as it challenges deeply rooted cultural norms and religious values that shape societal attitudes. Consequently, perceptions of acceptability and unacceptability remain subjective, shaped by the perspectives and experiences of the individuals. Conversely, the acceptance of intersex and transgender individuals has been widely increased all around the globe and even in Pakistan. This article has been compiled based on empirical and theoretical evidence from different studies to highlight the perception of youth regarding the social acceptance of the LGBTIQ community with reference to transgender bill, cultural values, religious principles, Aurat March, criminalization, and decriminalization perspective.
