Abstract

The present study explores public perception of media coverage regarding terrorist acts, especially the Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park blast in 2016. The basic purpose of the study is to find out the public perception of media coverage, the effects of media coverage on the behavior of the masses, critically analyze the role of media in covering terrorist activities, investigate the role of news channels while covering Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park blast and to determine the role of media in covering terrorist attacks.  The present study is conducted using the Cultivation Theory and Framing Theory. The research conducted on the survey and questionnaire methodology is used for data collection. A sample of 200 respondents, aged 18 to 24 years, was drawn. University students were the targeted population of the survey. Findings reveal that media create sensation while covering terrorist attacks. Facts are mostly distorted when the media frames an event in its particular style. The study concluded that media coverage regarding terrorist attacks have a great influence on public. The results of the case study show that the media downplayed important facts covering Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park blast. The concentration of media coverage was a particular section of society. Moreover, it is concluded that the media remained fail in presenting factual, objective, realistic, and accurate reporting. Media coverage during Gulshan-e-Iqbal Park blast was problematic and irresponsible.  The hypothesis regarding two variables was proved.
