Abstract

The purpose of this study was to explore the challenges and opportunities of AI in graphic design in the Pakistani media industry. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with graphic designers (25), AI experts (25), and industry professionals (25). The data were analyzed thematically, revealing five themes related to AI challenges and opportunities in graphic design: AI opportunities in graphic design, AI challenges in graphic design, AI integration in graphic design, and the role of human designers, education, and training. The results showed that although participants were generally aware of AI technology, there were concerns regarding its impact on the media industry. Participants recognized the potential benefits of AI-powered design tools, including increased efficiency and accuracy, but also highlighted ethical implications related to ownership and provenance. Collaboration between designers and AI was emphasized as a key factor for the successful integration of AI into the media systems. The study concludes that continued research and discussion are necessary for designers to navigate the changing media industry landscape and adapt their skills to work with AI-powered design tools.
