Abstract

This study is based on qualitative rhetorical analysis of the maiden speeches of four different Prime Ministers of Pakistan namely Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Shariff, Yousuf Raza Gillani and Imran Khan to evaluate the similarities and differences among the rhetorical strategies adopted by them. This study investigated the selection of topics by the leaders and analyzed these topics while considering the rhetorical situation and purpose of the orator in choosing these topics. Seven inaugural addresses from 1988 till 2018 were accounted. Although these speeches were delivered by politicians from three different political parties, these speeches shared some features. As the inaugural address is the epidictic type of speech, it does not have the explanation of a specific political question rather it is about praises and condemns the situation, policies, and the previous governments.
