Qualitative Analysis on Interactive Family Literacy Program of Preschoolers: Parental Attitudes, Willingness and Current Practices

Family literacy is considered a strong support from parents, guardians, siblings, grandparents etc. to promote learning at home. Parents are the first teacher of their child. Children’s family and environment at home has a strong influence on reading, writing and arithmetic skills in preschool child development. Based on the effectiveness of family literacy, the authors of this article explored parental attitudes, willingness and current practices on interactive family literacy program of pre-school children (N=72) from 60 families to explore parents’ attitudes to implement the family literacy program in the home setting; as well as the willingness of parents towards family literacy program; c) find out the existing practices of parents to enhance reading skills of pre-school children. Overall, they found that parents had poor reading practices at home with their kids, however, they inclined towards family literacy reading program at home. The authors conclude their article with avenues for future researchers with recommendations to promote family literacy by using different ways i.e., mass media awareness campaigns to educate parents and the community on family literacy.
