Abstract

In today's university environment, social media plays a major role in students' life by promoting communication and socializing. However, it also has a darker side, as indicated by a rise of cyber deviancy among university students. The purpose of this study is to determine the specific features of social media platforms that lead to students' participation in cyber deviant conduct. Data was collected via semi-structured interviews with 30 undergraduate students obtained from disciplinary committee reports, using a qualitative research methodology using a phenomenological approach. Thematic analysis of the data observed repeating patterns linked to social media characteristics that encourage cyber deviancy. The study's findings contribute to a deeper knowledge of the complex link between social media use and cyber deviancy, guiding efforts to establish a safer online environment.
